Problem with Cmos and rechargable batteries

Hi all,

I have a Dell Latitude D820 which is having a problem with both the Cmos and the rechargable batteries.

It does not retain CMOS settings unless it is connected to the charger. Changing the Cmos battery out has made no difference.

In addition, it does not recognize the rechargeable battery (neither the regular one nor the supplementary one that goes into the DVD slot). I have verified that the supplementary battery is good.

It works fine just as long as it stays connected to the charger and the CMOS settings are reentered when turning it on.

Am I looking at a bad motherboard here?
has anyone else run into something like this?

Well, I don't know of your specific problem, but every single Dell laptop I've ever had (at least 4 of them) has needed motherboard replacement, including the current one I'm using which is a little over a year old. Most all of them started with battery problems.
