conversion

when you converted from vob to avi
was it DV AVI raw or AVI ( divx / xvid )?

vob are mpeg2 files compressed
DV AVI RAW are not, and are not chapterable
AVI ( divx / xvid type ) are mpeg4 compressed and also are not chapterable
vob use IFO & BUP file for chapter and navigation

according to WD it does not support DVD AVI

DVD VOB files are Video Objects. They can be menus or part of the program.

Worth a try: Select a VOB file and press F2 (rename). Change the .vob extension to .mpg

Some DVDs have chapters in one large file. Others have individual files for each chapter. If yours is the former, can you add "pointers" to the file after its loaded into the media player? Seems like there should be some media management menus in there somewhere.

I don't know if this will help at all; but I had a lot of problems playing media on my D-Link Media Center (DSM-520) when I first took it out of the box.

After installing their newest firmware - it worked much, much better. Fixed most of my problems.

It might be worth a try. The manufactures website should have information on the latest firmware/downloads/how to install.
