new cartridge not recognized
I have a HP PSC 1600 printer about years old. It's been running just fine for most the time, but now it does not recognize the new cartridge. It keeps saying 'wrong cartridge installed'.
Also printer will not shut down completely, just says 'shutting down' and stays there. Are these related both problems came up at the same time. Does this printer need a good cleaning?

What happens when you put in the old cartridge?
Try unplugging the printer from power and the computer and letting it sit for a day. Before you plug it in, uninstall the printer from the computer and let the computer find and reinstall the drivers.

Several years ago I had a similar message using a cartridge from a store that refills and exchanges cartridges.
The cause was that the store reset the chip in the cartridge incorrectly.

Psc 1600 reset
This first link is pretty basic, but you may want to look at it.
'Incorrect Print Cartridge' Error Message Appears on the Control Panel Display HP PSC 1610 All-in-One Printer - HP Customer Care (Philippines - English)
If there's nothing there of value, try this:
The PSC 1600 series only supports a Full reset.
To perform Full reset please perform the following steps :
1.. Unplug the power cord from the all-in-one.
2.. Press and hold the OK and CANCEL buttons on the front panel keypad.
3.. While still holding the buttons, plug the power cord back in.
Continue to hold the buttons for two seconds, and then release them.
4.. It will display a message "Deriv Clear" confirming that reset is done.
You can restore the factory defaults by using the steps :
1. Press setup.
2. Scroll Right or Left arrow keys until "Tools" is displayed
3. Press ok.
4. Scroll Right or Left arrow keys until "Restore Factory defaults " is displayed.
5. Press ok.
The above steps will restore the PSC 1600 to factory defaults.
If no joy at that point . . .
1. First disconnect the power cable.
2. Press and hold # button and 6 button on the printer keypad while plugging in the power cable.
3. Turn the printer off and back on.
And if STILL no joy, try a chat session with an HP Tech at: Printers and Multifunction
I've had to do both full and partial resets on my PSC 2210 over the years to get it going. Usually the displayed error message wasn't indicative of the real problem. Good luck.
Let us know how you come out.
