Slow Toshiba

I have a Toshiba Laptop Techra (2002 XP)that I use as a file back up, and my wife uses for her e-mail. I have to continuously clean out spyware and an occasional virus (Sophos Protected) (Ad Aware for the cookies) After the clean outs, it runs faster, but not as fast as when new. 1st question, is there a way to stop the large amount of legitamate emails from stores etc that bombard this address, other than pnoning all these companies, and 2nd, is there something else I can look at to determine what might be loading up and slowing down the system so I can delete them without losing operational value? Any suggestions will be welcome!

Slow PC

Do a "disk cleanup" to remove non-essential and temporary files.

I had a similar problem mine took forever and I mean forever to boot up. I downloaded a free program called WINPATROL and reduced my start up from close to 45 minutes down to about three. It's a program that lets you see what's running in the background so you can shut it down or stop it from starting in the first place. It also tells you if something is trying to load that you don't know about. I highly recommend it even if you don't have a problem.

I tried winpatrol, but since it was IE based, it didn't do anything to help my computer. 45 minute startup???!!! Wow. Mine only takes a couple of minutes at most without the add on.

I'm using Firefox 4.8 and it works perfect. I don't know wich program was making the system take so long but which ever one it was WinPatrol let me fix it. I suppose I could go back and restore each program to find out but I won't bother.

Well it took a few minutes to figure out how to download the free version of WinPatrol, but after it loaded things definitely improved. I too would like to know which program slowed it down, because there are a lot of company based programs that I don't HAVE to have loaded on that computer....

email software

you did not mention what email software you use
or weather you use a web based email

thunderbird has excellent filter capacities with the abilities to create
white list to include only the emails you want and exclude all others
the other way is to subscribe to an email screening service where all emails are pre screened / previewed the message header to decide if you
want to receive them

It's part of the Mozilla/ Firefox suites, and yes, they are free.
