Windows 7 is barely wheels up, so I wouldn't expect much for the next few years at least.

I stoped at Win2K. It was really the last one you could own and wasn't the size of a house. Oh you You can buy from MS but when you can't change major hardware with out permission and they retain the right to disable it that is not really owning it IMHO.

I've been using Windows 7 for about two months now at work and I'm pretty happy with it, except for the fact I can't ftp to our servers with it - have to pull out the old XP machine when I need to do that

Actually, I expect the next version of Windows to show up some time in 2012, maybe late in 2011, at least in beta form. Microsoft is already hard at work on the Windows 7 replacement.

You never owned a Microsoft OS, just a copy and a license to use it.

Yes, you are limited to some hardware changes requiring re-activation in XP and newer. Most users shouldn't have a problem with that. If you limit to a couple system upgrades a year, you can online activate with no problem.
