Always build my own out of last years "have to have" parts from Ebay and salvaged parts from older computers. Never spent over $300 on a computer. Of course I also use Linux so I don't have to buy an operating system, pay for software or use anti virus programs. Thar saves another 300-400 dollars.

If you don't want to go completely from scratch you can buy a bare bones that usually includes case, CPU, and PSU. Just add drives and memory and you have a computer for usually under $500. You can use the drives in your old computer, maybe even the memory and video card.

I always thought that tigerdirect.com has good prices, both with parts and complete pc's. The kids favor newegg...... but they also have more money and desire to have the best baddest pc they can get.

I like Newegg for the user reviews. Sometimes a product will have 60 or more actual purchasers giving feedback. There is occasionally some strongly negative feedback so I'm reasonably sure Newegg doesn't censor the feed back.
