Laptop LCD horrendous refresh rate

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop where the laptop's LCD screen takes 4-5 seconds to refresh or redraw the image. Some colors are also missing as the image is very bright, lacking darker colors (however black is present). The borders on the LCD also look wavey and washed. When I connect the laptop up to an external monitor, it works perfectly fine.

Could this be a screen, inverter or video card issue? Is there an easy way to check either of these?

Could be a screen issue, the fact an external monitor works fine rules out the video card in my mind

I would check to see if your inverter is failing. I had that happen with an HP laptop I had. The screen was all washed out and everything. Replaced the inverter and it worked until i dropped something on the screen and shattered it.
