HP deskjet 5550 prints from paint, but not from word or excel.
I am having a problem with my printer that I do not know how to solve. I have a deskjet 5550, I am running vista on an hp machine. the printer worked fine until about a week ago, then all of a sudden, we cannot print. I have browsed other forums, and tried some things but they are old posts, and nothing has worked so far.
I have removed the printer and restarted, allowing the computer to find it. It states that it installs correctly. However upon trying to print a word doc, I am unable to do so.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

there are no pop ups or messages. When click on print, the printer starts as it always has, the ink cartridge carriage moves back and forth as though it is printing. The page comes out blank. If i ask it to print test page from properties, the heading windows printer test page prints with the microsoft windows logo but nothing else. I am able to print an email. i use outlook. i printed a page from the hp website, so i think it has something to do with office 2007. i also have a canon printer that works, but uses ink so fast, i need to fix my hp. if you need other stuff let me know. Thanks for responding.

Typically, things do not just quit working, they respond to something which is different.
So, are you aware of anything on the system having changed in the last week?

I would try downloading the latest drivers for the printer after I was sure no other printers show in the MY COMPUTER part. Not even if the other printer show not online.
Windows sometimes creates a fax machine with the printer name. If that shows I would delete it also. Make sure there is only the newest creation of the printer showing in the my computer section labeled printers. Sometimes the programs have the old one listed as the default printer so if it shows in the printer list they send to that printer anyways. If that is the problem then with the older printer removed the program will ask for the location of the new printer.

I would do all of the above and would like to add that you should run a virus scan and see if something comes up. Maybe someone in your household opened a bad e-mail or visited a website that was hacked into and bad code was dumped. Also from past experience with printer problems the best thing to do is to unplug the printer from the usb port and then plug it back in when the printers software prompts you during install. If everything checks out and you have tried all of the above and this too then maybe it is time for a new printer. Good luck to you!

Printing Word documents
Does the printer eject a blank page when it starts? If so, look at the bottom of the document at the tool bar which shows the page numbers in the document. You may have a blank page as the last page of the document. If the printer prints the pages in reverse order, the first page coming out will be blank.
