xfer files

I did a search but may not have used the proper terminology, so here goes again. Got a new (to me) computer today, since the screen on my old one went south. Been using it with a TV hooked up.
Anyway, I have a Network USB Link cable, and would like to pick and choose stuff to transfer. Anyone got good ideas on how to do this? Do I need to install drivers (have to find them) on both computers?

Hi.

Why dont you network the two? Thats the easiest.

Or I believe you would need a cross over cable, not a regular ethernet cable, if you want to do it computer to computer.

Here are some other suggestions.

I looked at one of the EHow methods and it involved purchasing into a server site and doing it, which isn't what I want to do. The one you have linked looks as if it will work. I do have the USB network cable, which takes out the 5 volts so it won't blow the mobo, and as luck would have it, I was searching through my disks and found the driver disk, so we may be ready to go. I'll try to follow that EHow thing and see how it works. Thanks..

If its only a few files , e mail them to yourself. That would be fairly simple.

I am not sure what a network USB cable is? Faster data rate?

How do you get on the internet? Create a network and a share folder on each computer and just drag what you want over..

Just some thoughts.

The free version of DropBox is a good way. In fact I use it for backup too.

I downloaded dropbox, but only 2G is free. I have 8G thumb drives, so I'll wait and see on that one. Looks cool, though, and since you can sync between two computers, it will save having to email them to yourself.

Moving files

I use "copy" and "paste" in Windows Explorer when I want to select individual files or complete folders. This would work well using an external drive if you have one. Good luck with your project.

Yeah, Mike, it turned out not to be as big a booger as I thought it would be. I had all the programs on disk, so after I loaded the programs, I just dumped the data onto thumbdrives, one program at a time and it worked just fine. I was overbuilding the entire process, thinking I would have to connect the laptops together, etc. No biggie.
Yeah, Ken, WE does make it easier than going through each program. Copy/paste works good on that.
