Web Page Changes

My website hosting came with a pre-installed program to build the website. It is called "Site Studio". It no longer seems to function under IE8 (only works with IE). Richtext editor no longer allows me to upload content. I asked the administrator and they recommended I switch to a more current service.

I'm not a web guy, or a computer guy so the easier the better. Alot of the responses I get from the host help desk assume that I know what the heck they are talking about. I have finally found how to change or add a new service to my hosting account.

The two available that are at the top of the list are WoodPress and Joomla.

I really don't want to have to recreate my website, something that I have been adding to for years. In order to duplicate, I would have to go through a stack of CD's to find which one contains the pictures I want to use. But if that is whats needed, so be it.

1. Is there a way to transfer everything from current to new service or is it apples to oranges. Will be with the same hosting service.

2. Which of the 2 mentioned site builders is foolproof and easy to use for a no IT guy. Or is there another to look at?

This is my current hosting company CaFW Web Hosting

Don't you love it how companies provide a service for you to use, then leave it to you to figure out what to do when it eventually goes out of date? Not very helpful... but that's another discussion.

Both tools are quite good and have a lot of people backing them. In my prior research (I personally haven't used either), Joomla is a bit more 'techy'. Gives you some more options, but is also sometimes more work. Wordpress is set up so anyone can use it. Also Wordpress has a LOT of active community support, so you can get free/paid templates, tools, widgets, etc. that do just about anything you want it to do.

I think you're unfortunately going to have some difficulties migrating your data. Unless Site Studio provides some soft of export mechanism. You may want to try to enlist the help of your hosting company as they may be able to help, presumably you're not the first person trying to upgrade your site (but then again, they may not help).

Looking into it a bit, it seems that Wordpress has tools to import content from other systems! It may not be 100%, but it should be a good start.

Good luck! Before you know it, you'll be a WordPress or Joomla expert

They still happily cash my check every year.

I also love how companies come out of the woodwork and swarm when it is time to renew my domain name.

How do I go about building a new site on an alternative script and not have people searching for me to be directed to the old? Does the last publishing under that web address supersede all others? Or, does it not matter because it is all through the same Hosting Company?

Thanks a ton, BTW for the first response.

You can set up the new WordPress/Joomla application on a temporary folder, like www.yourdomain.com/wordpress
You can then do all your testing and setup in private. Once it's ready to go, change the address and it will be the primary at www.yourdomain.com

Happy to help, but it's hard to give specifics, it's all about the hosting company. May I ask your hosting company?

CaFW Web Hosting

On the bright side, if I can get this going, is that it gives me a chance to reduce the file sizes on all my pictures. The first 6 mo. setting up and adding to the websight all the before and after pictures, I was just uploading straight from my picture files. Being on High Speed Internet, I didn't notice any issues. Then ran into several customers who were on slower internet and it took hours to load. By then, I just didn't have the time to go back and reduce and upload every image. Images are about all my website consists of with explanations. Now I'm glad I was a lazy bum, as I would now be looking at doing it an additional time. For the past few years, I have been using reduced files, yet the bulk were the ones shot with the 2 MP digital. I guess I am glad they were not HD files, or no one would be able to access.
