windows98-when i go to find files and look at a file i notice it makes a shortcut copy of the file at the bottom of the list of files.is this supposed to happen?

No it is not supposed to do that. Are you sure it is a shortcut, does it have the little diagonal arrow on the bottom left hand corner?
Can you list exactly what you do, and exactly what results you get?

I just checked 2 of my computers, the one with windows ME it does put the most recent excessed files and put shortcuts in a folder WINDOWS/RECENT/
I didn't find that on the computer with windows 98. Shortcuts are not copies of the file, just a route/redirector to the file /folder. My feeling is if the system is working fine, and is not giving you undue headaches don't worry about or mess with it.
You mean by FIND FILES meaning using the search for files or folders function , some files will have shortcuts, it is just the way it is set up.
Is this a problem for you or are you just curious.

rls,
This is just a guess, it sounds to me that when you do a find you are getting hits on shortcuts that may be in your 'most recently used' folder. For example, on Windows 98 if you go to start/documents there are a bunch of shortcuts created for documents you have opened most recently. If this is the case, no big deal.
