Where Picture Was Taken

Is there some type of software that will show me the location a picture was taken?
Thank you!

I may be way off, but I can't see how that's possible, unless the camera used, has a tracking device in it, so you could follow the picture taker's path.
I wouldn't think a camera could be that smart to know and remember exactly where a pic was taken.
This is assuming you're asking about pictures that are still in your camera or phone and not a pic found somewhere.

I thought that was an issue with Facebook and the like - people being able to tell where you were when picture was taken. Not my area, though, I don't take pictures or spend time on FB.

Maybe if it was a phone with GPS and there was an app to do that but that is way over my head.

This would be true, but I'd also think you'd have to tell it in advance to mark locations. I don't think it can be done after the fact.

Perhaps Dawter could clarify his question a bit, as to where the pics are.

Yes read here...

Thats why I have a dumb phone so no one can track me....

Also I believe you can turn that feature off, but some apps require it to be activated...

All (most) photos have EXIF data included. It usually includes the file size, resolution, etc. Depending on the camera, it can have the camera details, f-stop, exposure, iso settings, etc etc. Again, depending on the camera can also include GPS data. Smartphones nowadays have GPS built in, as do more and more cameras. I know on the iPhone you can turn that feature on or off, but a lot of people like having record of where the photo was taken.

There are online utilities to read the EXIF data like Extract camera information from any Jpeg (Jpg) image file or there are a host of downloadable tools to read the 'hidden' EXIF data.

Mitch17 you are correct. Facebook strips EXIF data from pictures that are uploaded.

Many modern cameras include at least crude GPS receivers. If the camera has it, it would have to be turned on for that information to be included in the EXIF of the photo. My latest rugged/underwater camera has a GPS for location, compass to know what direction the camera is facing and water depth or elevation. Way too much information for my likes.

A guy I used to work with has a phone that adds the location when he sends a text or email to his wife (anyone else too I suppose). She loves it and I know she always asks him where he's at just to make sure he's not lying!

Zorfdt, thats what I'm looking for.
I have software that removes the data but don't have software to see where the pic was taken.
There was a big deal about this because people were posting pictures on the internet then thieves would find out where the pic was taken and rob them.

When I take pics with the phone, Google stores them and emails them back to me. I was surprised to see they not only include a google street map of the location but a pic of the house or location from google street view. I don't remember setting this app up but it's a pretty cool feature.

The term is "exif viewer"
most web browsers have basic support as an add-on or plug-in feature.
New plug ins include GPS data, and some bring up a google map window.

It made the news last year when 3 Burger King workers were fired
their "anonymous" photo included the GPS location of the store.

Dirty lettuce photo gets 3 Burger King workers fired - CBS News

Basically all phones can tag the photo with location data.
Newer cameras are becoming more phone-like, using micro sd sized cards,
charging batteries internally via micro-usb, so it's no surprise they include GPS.
