What's eating my bytes?

I have a Sony Vaio laptop. It is Windows 7. A notification window came up telling me that my hard drive was running out of memory. I haven't added any programs recently, yet my available memory keeps shrinking. I have moved some things to an external hard drive, but after awhile, my memory shrinks again without my having used my laptop for anything.

What do I do?

Start looking at the size of your folders so you can narrow down where the culprit is. My ex-wife's office computer had the same thing happen and it was the log file detailing the errors between the PC and the printer which was filling the drive.

Just to be clear...is the message saying your hard drive is filling up....or that you are low on memory? Two different things.

Good point, Vic - I assumed the word harddrive meant it was out of space but memory usually means RAM.

I think something is being lost in the translation here. If the hard drive were filling up, you'd be getting a low disk space message, it wouldn't say anything about "memory." Exactly what is this message you're getting?

Like mitch said, "memory" is RAM, hard drive is storage space (unless of course you have an Android phone). Logs are notorious for filling up hard drives. Search for *.txt and *.log files. You'll get a ton of stuff but logs are in there. Shuffle the search results by 'size' and look for big files. Then you can see what is doing all the logging if thats the culprit.

Thank you for all of the replies, I appreciate it. ^^

I don't have any space to do anything on my computer. When I try to add files or something or even when I've been on Chrome or another program for a while (Lightroom 4 will tell me that I need to make sure that I have 20 mb of space before I can do anything else), I will get a message saying that there are only x mb left (the number tends to fluctuate a lot).

I downloaded both of those programs and it's cleared up a few gb, but all of the free space that it had cleared has been filled up again.

I deleted about 11 gb worth of files off of my computer a week or two ago so that I could use my computer for a while. I just recently left my computer off for about 5 or 6 days to see if it would still take up free space. I turned it back on yesterday and I had around 900 mb left! What is going on...?

You are indeed having your hard drive filled up as opposed to RAM issues.

This is now a hunt - where is the space on your machine allocated? What files/folders are growing?
