Suggestions for router purchase?

My friend wants a router for her laptop. No biggie except that she also wants the signal to work at her mother-in-law house 300' away. And her house is built w/earth-packed walls that are 14" thick. Suggestions?
Thanks!!

Maybe a signal repeater would work. I doubt a router would be effective at that range with the obstruction.

300' is even too long to run a cat5 cable. Wireless certainly won't work. Does she see any internet signals at the in-laws house when she is there?

I have heard of antennas that will increase the range of routers and maybe it might help to send the signal out further if you get an external antenna. I seriously doubt though that it would go to 300' maybe 100' without degrading much but 300' no at least not without serious degradation of the signal.

Wow - I must apologize for my slow reply! My life is insane right now. I have a little more info. My friend has internet at both houses: "fast" at her house and "slow" at the MIL (is that odd?). Her old puter is dying but she has a nice laptop. I suggested she chuck the CPU and use the laptop, plus get a router so she can roam. I know very little but she knows even less than I (she didn't know what a router was). But she did wonder if she could get the "fast" connection down to the MIL house thru the router somehow. From your posts it sounds like if it is possible it would be a lot of trouble. I think she's just going to let the folks in the MIL house muddle along w/a slow connection. Thank you all for your help. As always, this site is awesome!

I use these for bridging buildings - they're good for up to a mile.. You will need 2 of them, and they will need to be on the outside of each house and pointed at each other with reasonable line of sight.

I passed this on to my friend. Not sure how much she's willing to spend. I'll wait til I hear from her again before I pick your brain about hookups, etc. Thanks again - I love learning new stuff like this.
