Malwarebytes ineffective ?

I routinely alternate scanning my pc with malwarebytes and superantispyware [both free editions] I recently noticed that every time I use the malwarebytes it finds nothing so after running it last, I then ran the superantispyware scan and it picked up 691 threats which were then removed.

Has anyone had issues with malwarebytes? It's always worked well for me in the past Both are always updated prior to the scan.

Interesting. I occasionally run malwarebytes but always find nothing. I may try the superantispyware if no one has any bad comments.

I have superantispyware embed on start up. I'll have to check Malwarebytes. Both are installed.

I'm trying as we post. Yes it's finding all kinds of stuff. I never had a problem with MB. I'm a bit concerned that Superanti is finding so much stuff. Doesn't seem right. (Lots of false positives?)
Pulpo seems to be the computer guru here. I'd like to see his thoughts on this.

marksr, is it updating first? If not, that or any other malware program are worthless.

This program detected 2295 threats! MB found none. Do I continue with Super... or just skip it?

Unknown virus has disabled malwarebytes, short cuts and won't allow IE to start - Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs

It just occurred to me what's happening & I just searched Google for it. Sure enough, it's there. Anti Malware from malwarebytes.org is being disabled by the virus.

Try combo fix.

The vast majority of the 2295 threats are cookies from other webs sites. These are not threats. They are cookies that help me navigate the web. I'll be deleting Super...since it does not do what it should.

For the most part, they aren't threats & I use cookies too. However, I heard a guy from EFF say, "if I can copy a cookie, to your browser, I can become you." Just a thought.

what's IE

I routinely delete most cookies, I've always figured the less junk on my pc the better it will run.

IE is Internet Explorer but that's really just a side note, to your problem. You have some type of malware that is disabling malwarebytes. The site that I posted recommends Combo Fix. I haven't looked for any alternatives to that yet. Maybe I can do that later today. You might want to try Combo Fix.

I only use super anti and delete what ever it finds. Malware bytes does not work well as it used to..so I dont run it anymore.

I also clear out all temp folders with glary utilitys..

Just my 2 cents

This is pretty interesting and a little concerning. MB has been a standard for a very long time. I've never even heard of Superantispyware before.

I run the paid version of malwarebytes and have been pretty satisfied with it. I just ran the superantispyware program and got 730 "threats".... all tracking cookies. Not what I'd consider a threat either.

Thank you Mike! - I completely switched over to these products on your recommendation a month or so ago after I downloaded some pretty nasty stuff on accident. They are more thorough, run faster and are one click easy to use. They even clear the shadows left behind if you delete a picture from a document folder.

They are cookies that help me navigate the web.
Norm - I delete all these things daily and have no problem surfing the web or navigating for that matter. Do you use "favorites" to link your most often visited pages? I've never understood cookies as anything other than a way for web sites to deposit a little of themselves on your computer. Most sites I visit, I don't want them to remember or recognize me when I return.

Ok, just searched on the super and got dozens of places where I could download it. Which one would anyone recommend?

I know my computer is loaded with old cookies because I have been afraid to do any cleaning beyond the basic clear recent history. I just hope my pc will still work after a good cleaning .

I looked it up earlier when it was mentioned. Editor reviews weren't exactly sparkling. Said it wasn't terribly effective at removing malware, but did a good job on cookies. At best they called it 'average', at worst they called it 'outdated' and struggling to maintain relevance.

I gave up on Malwarebytes years ago as I found at the time that SuperAntiSpyware was just better at detection. Of course times change and I haven't been using Malwarebytes in a while so it may have changed. From what I am hearing though I am not interested in going back. If you want to download SuperAntiSpyware go here and download the free edition SUPERAntiSpyware | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!. As Pulpo said though you need to keep up on the definition downloads especially with SuperAntiSpyware as it isn't done automatically but there are reminders that pop up and you can click on those to update.

Anyone ever tried Spybot-Search and Destroy? It seems to get pretty favourable reviews.

Yeah, I use Spybot. It just runs in the background, and gets updated automatically. I often forget I have it, since it isn't telling me much.

wildbill I think that’s what’s called “begging the question” ( I mean in its true original meaning, "circular reasoning", not meaning “raises the question” as the poorly informed so-called journalists use the expression today).

You have to know for certain that it works properly to feel buoyed that it hasn’t found anything.

Just sayin!

Yes I use favorites. But cookies do no harm (no point in eliminating them and it makes surfing a lot easier). I found out that going to extremes to fend off virus or malware is futile. Using the standard programs be it MB or Super... and maybe SpyBot along with MS Defender is all that is necessary. The biggest thing one can do to avoid problems is to use common sense. Stay away from suspicious sites. If one uses peer to peer file sharing or pirate sites or porno sites then be prepared to get infected. Use a sandbox or at least private browsing. Don't open e-mail just because it has a friends or relatives name attached to it. You can usually tell if it's in fact from them or from a scam. Look closely at the address.

In my original response, I posted a site that recommended Combp Fix. I thought of 2 other ways, to bypass the virus that causes anti malware from malwarebytes.org from giving false negatives.

Boot to safe mode, (F8) & try to run it. Many viruses don't run in safe mode. If the authors of the virus were smart, they would have only blocked their virus, from being reported.

marksr or anyone else who has a problem getting rid of a virus, download & run Hijack This from Trend Mircro & post the output here. I will tell you what to delete.

If you are having a problem w/ Combo Fix , download Hijack This from Trend Micro, run it & post the output here. I will tell you what to delete. In fact, everyone who reads this post should download it now, for future reference.

I use the free versions of both Malwarebites and Super Antispyware, in addition to a paid subscription to Norton 360. I run all 3 scans once a week on the same day. Malwarebites and Norton always show a clean computer. Super Antispyware always finds dozens if not hundreds of tracking cookies. I have noticed a sharp surge in the number of tracking cookies it finds every week. In the past, I used to accumulate around 75 tracking cookies a week. However, in the last few months, it's finding several hundred tracking cookies a week. I always surf pretty much the same sites, so I don't know if Superantispyware is more "sensitive" than before, or if the websites have greatly increased the number of tracking cookies they're using. I've always presumed Malwarebites was looking for a different type of bug than either Superantispyware or Norton 360 was. There doesn't seem to be any one program, free or subscription that does it all.

One of the differences is that one is a script while the other is a compiled executable. Norton is more apt to be looking for the compiled executable which can be deep in the registry while Malwarebytes would be looking for a script, which does not have to be compiled & may not have registry entries.

There doesn't seem to be any one program, free or subscription that does it all.
That's why I like Hijack This. It shows all running processes, good or bad. The user has to decide what to allow or deny. After reading a few hundred reports, it becomes quite clear what belongs & what doesn't.

Here are a few things that are red flags, to me.
Toolbars are insecure & should be uninstalled. That's even before HJT is run
BHOs, also toolbar & web page related.
Anything running in the RunOnce folder, of the registry.
userinit.exe in the system.ini file.

Malware authors use the names, of real MS files so you think that they belong but they really don't. The location determines, if it belongs or not. If they are in the system32 folder, they are okay. Anywhere else, they have to be deleted. Such is the case with the userinit.exe that I mentioned before. It doesn't belong is the system.ini folder.

If you're worried about tracking just install Ghostery. It will block tracking as you surf.

Time to take this issue off of the back burner - as much as I'd like for it to resolve itself I know it won't

I downloaded HiJack This, ran it and I'm totally lost

Let me preface my list by saying that Toolbars & BHOs are insecure, so my list includes BHOs. I usually recommend all Toolbars be unisntalled. In your case, I recommend that the first BHO be deleted. Leave the others for now because your main problem sees to be:

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=

That ^^^ is probably your main problem
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

Delete that ^^^ BHO.

Leave the following BHOs, for now.

O2 - BHO: avast! Online Security - {8E5E2654-AD2D-48bf-AC2D-D17F00898D06} - C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\aswWebRepIE.dll
O2 - BHO: SkypeIEPluginBHO - {AE805869-2E5C-4ED4-8F7B-F1F7851A4497} - C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Toolbars\Internet Explorer\skypeieplugin.dll
O2 - BHO: Java(tm) Plug-In 2 SSV Helper - {DBC80044-A445-435b-BC74-9C25C1C588A9} - C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\jp2ssv.dll
