NAS using external HDD enclosure

I recently purchased an Asus AC68R router. I like it but would like to attach an external HDD to use as a NAS. I have 2 I can chose from. 1 is a Toshiba the other is just an enclosure that has an internal HDD installed in it.

By biggest concern is having the drive on all the time. I put the Toshiba on it last night and it never went to sleep. I would rather it NOT spin constantly.

I checked with Asus, and they said there is no setting in their firmware that allows me to put attached devices to sleep after an period of time.
Toshiba was unable to answer my question.
The enclosure company said I would have to contact the manufacture of the HDD inside the enclosure.

Is there a way to put a small program on the HDD that will cause the drive to idle and went someone tries to access the HDD over the network, will cause the drive to spin up and be accessible?

edit: Inside the enclosure is a West Digital Caviar SE 800JD (old hdd)

Try an alternative firmware such as "tomato by Shibby" or dd-wrt.

I'm running tomato on my Linksys router and "spin down hard drive when idle" is an option.

Otherwise you'd need a HD with a BIOS that can be configured for power options.
