I currently have a Compaq model 5070 which is an AMD K6-2 processor with 32 mb shared memory that I upgraded to 160. Is it possible to upgrade the processor to an AMD Anthalon or would it be cheaper and easier to buy a new computer. I'm buy no means a computer expert, but I can plug in wires. I have added a cd burner and my own memory chip. I would appreciate and input.

I can't find enough info on this motherboard to know if it can be upgraded to an Anthalon, I have posted several sites that had info, including email info on how to contact compaq for information. What you want is a motherboard manual, I don't know if you have one, but you need a manual or spec sheet , and that will tell you the jumper settings for different cpu's and what the board is compatable with.

It is not always a simple matter and repalacing a cpu, jumper settings may have to be changed also. So again we need to know the motherboard name before I can find further info on it, compaq should have that information.

Buy a new computer, if you have children, a 2nd computer is always nice to have, rather it is needed and can be budgeted is something you have to evaluate.

Your system is not bad as it is.

That URL should just about get you on top of what you're looking for. I'm not sure what processor speed that system is (site won't load for me), but if it's a 300 or faster I'm sure it can be bumped up a little. If you can't locate what you need on Compaq's site, give them a call. They have that information handy. You can generally find the information you need for driver updates and white papers at http://www.compaq.com/support.

The K6-2 is a Super Socket 7 processor and the Athlon is either a Socket A or Slot A processor. They are VERY different motherboards.
