Windows 7 Updates not installing
So the last successful W7 update on my computer was about a month ago. It seem like I don't get notices any longer so I check manually.
I'm up to 32 important updates available but when I try to download them, the download status is stuck at 0% (even though I see new files in Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Download folder after deleting them.)
Windows defender is one of the updates available that won't install and if I go to the Action Center to get the update, it too starts but then just hangs.
I've googled the problem and tried about every solution that seemed safe but the Windows Update Download just stays at 0% and never changes.
If I shut down, I am notified there are updates to be installed before the system shuts down so one or two updates were installed today while rebooting.
Any suggestions??
Thanks

OK, I'll change that setting and give it a try. I hate MS doing things to m computer 'automagically'!

I would also look for a Microsoft Fix It for update problems and look specifically for answers to your update problem on the Microsoft forum. I went to the Microsoft forum for answers to my update problems and was directed not only to the Fix It but to other ways to solve the update problem such as reinstalling the Updater itself which requires a download from Microsoft.

I checked the forums, and tried Fix It but still no luck. I think Fit It stopped working and I had to cancel it. Maybe I'll try again. Reinstalling Updater is next on my list of things to try.
Thanks for the suggestions!

How long do you wait for it to change? I just downloaded/installed 35 updates this morning, it seems like it takes forever especially that first one. I'd guess it took over half an hour and I have cable internet so speed shouldn't be an issue.

Is Norton running on that machine?

I set it for 'automatic' updates now so we will see what happens. I notice there is an Install folder in the Download folder as of this morning so maybe the automatic setting is taking care of things? I'll let it go all day and check the update history tonight.
Thanks....

Tried that too, picked a small update but stuck at 0%
Looks like that may have been the secret!
I checked the update history tonight and only had one update installed this morning. Figured I'd 'Check for Updates' and low and behold, 28 were ready to install!
Selected Install updates and off it went. One failed but 27 installed. 2 more updates ready to download. Much better than 30 something waiting to download.
Thanks to all for the help, not sure it's 100% solved but moving in the right direction.
Praxius - This happened to me, and the only way I could get the updates was to let windows update automatically.

OK, things were working OK until I saw the automatic updates setting allowed MS to schedule my laptop to update to W10.
I don't want W10 on this machine, if I buy a new one I'll deal with it but I want to keep the current OS.
So I disabled the automatic updates and shortly after I did I noticed my machine slowed down a lot due to a CPU hog running.
I discovered it was a Windows update in the netscvs group (wuauserv) so I used task manager to stop the process and I have my performance back.
The windows update starts running at random so when I notice my machine grinding to a halt, I need to stop the process again. Not a big deal but annoying.
Is there any thing I can change to allow updates w/o getting W10 and to permanently stop the process CPU hog from running?
Thanks

I would just turn off the automatic updates until there are a few more that need to be installed. Doesn't take much to check and allow the auto update once a month or so. I also don't let MS update at their will.
