How do you safely remove keyboard dongles?

I have a logitech keyboard i move around between my pc and an android tv box and am wondering if it's ok to remove it when device powered on? I don't see any way to do the normal safe removal procedure. When i insert or remove it from my android tv, it causes it to reboot.

You can just unplug it and go.

You should be able to just unplug it. The only thing the 'safely remove' does is make sure all the open files are closed. There's nothing inherently 'unsafe' about removing a USB drive unless files are actually being written - in which case you can run into half-saved files and other corruption.

With a keyboard, there's no data corruption issues and no open files. I'd imagine there's an issue with the TV box where unplugging the USB device is causing a minor surge on the USB bus which isn't being suppressed well enough by the USB chips and associated components. I don't know of any solution to this other than finding a better quality box. Sorry!
