Windows 8.1 Malware Detected

I was searching the web for some technical information and soon after the Windows Defender popped this message: “Malware Detected Windows Defender taking action to clean detected malware” and after another window popped saying: “Detected threads are being cleaned, no further action is required”

But after rebooting and I go to the internet, the above messages re appear.

Checking the Defender I see it found this malware: “Exploit: SWF/Meadgive”, there are 6

Any idea how I can remove this malware?

A free program called Malware Bytes. I've used it for years.

Are you running a bit torrent client.... like uTorrent ?

If yes.... the most common cure I've seen/read about is to delete the client.
Most claimed Malwarebytes didn't help.

Let me see if I can be a bit more clear in directly answering your question.

I dont know where the malware is installed.

This is what anti-malware programs like Malware Bytes does, is search your computer, find the threat & remove it. In my opinion, YOU cant remove it.... even if you had the knowledge to find it & were able to recognize it.
Anti-malware software works similar to an antivirus in that it searches, finds & removes the threat.

Thanks donoli2016, pretty good thread

Luckily I had a system backup made last Thursday and when I did a restore it looks like the malware is gone.

My system has 2 HD, one SSD 120GB is the C:\ and used only for the Windows 8.1 and the other a SATA 800GB is the D:\ and that’s where I have all my programs / files. I use Macrium Reflect as my backup program and to restore my C:\ it only takes about 10 minutes.

There are hardly any changes on the C:\ except the updates by MS so I don’t worry about losing any personal files when I restore and my opinion is that any malware will install on the C:\

I use it and it isn't garbage. Next time you bash a product, look forward to a suspension!

People may agree, but the forum rules don't. Be aware.

Like it or not, I'm here to enforce the rules and policies. Members can certainly give their opinions without bashing a product or company. Something like "I prefer MalwareBytes over Defender" is sufficient.

Shadeladie -

Can you point us to where the rules are written down? I looked and looked and can't find them. I looked under "Terms and Conditions" and "FAQ" and come up short. I remember I tried to find them in the past and couldn't find them then.

I'm probably just looking in the wrong place and they are under my nose.

Ok thanks mark. Never noticed that at the top of the forum. I guess I got so used to seeing it and I just looked right past it. But seems strange that it’s posted per forum. Seems like it would the same rules for all forums – but I guess not.

But now I am really confused. Seems to me I’ve seen, for just one example, Windows Vista bashed into oblivion on this forum many times in the past. It’s like you might contract leprosy or something if you come anywhere near Vista.

Why aren’t those “Derogative” comments. (I don’t expect you to know the answer – just sayin)

How about this "Windows Defender" is a VERY BASIC product, that will often MISS VERY IMPORTANT security / malware etc issues. Whereas MALWAREBYTES IS A HIGHLY SOPHISTICATED and comprehensive product that will catch NEARLY everything (except some nasty rootkit stuff. The latter is rare and may necessitate very specialized find/destroy software often by companies like Kasperski.

Sorry that "garbage" seems so very offensive, even though it was directed at a product and most certainly not a person. I'll try to avoid that in the future.

IMO professional opinion as someone who has built and maintained networks for fortune 500 companies for over 25 years - we would never rely on Windows Defender for anything.

It does sound better, and we appreciate your toning it down a little. Glad you had a great IT career and are able to brag about it. We need information more than we need innuendoes about products or people. Thanks.
