flash drive files

Shortly before my old computer died I put all my vehicle maintenance files on a flash drive. I never bothered to put them on my new computer [now 6 months old] but would just plug in the flash drive when I needed to add to those files. Yesterday I went to add to my jeep's file and couldn't. Everything was originally in rich text. Now my pc claims it's in Word and I can only add to them if I sign up for a 30 day trial of Word .... which I don't want to do.

I plugged the flash drive into my lap top and was able to added to the file just like I always used to be able to. My desktop, laptop and old dead pc are all Win10. Any ideas as to what's going on? and how to get around it.

Download Libre or OpenOffice. It should be able to read the files

Try right-clicking on it, select "Open with" and changing the default application to Wordpad.

EDIT:
Sorry, my Win10 is bakly this morning (flaky HDD) and it took some doing so I could get it running to get the exact verbage (which M$ inexplicably decided to change with Win10).

In File Explorer, right-click on the file, click Open With> Choose another app> click on Wordpad, check the box "Always use this app to open .rtf files," then click OK.
