Working on a monitor is very dangerous. A capacitor in the rear holds a potentially lethal charge. Is your life worth the purchase price of a new or used monitor?

Speaking from painfull personal experience discharging the flyback with your elbow is not the way to do go. If you can find a repair manual that lists all the components and have a voltage discharge rod you could attempt to repair it yourself, or...you can get a quote from a shop, or replace it. Depending on where your at you can get it fixed for under $100. or buy a new one for around $170.
