Go Dell!
Go with http://www.dell.com
Best quality you can find and you should be able to find a system that you can afford.
Great prices these days on hardware.
Intel is dropping prices on P4 chips.
CD-RW drives are going down in price.
Compaq is laying off about 25% of its global work force.

Winmodems are evil I tells ya!
Oh, and make sure that isn't a winmodem. I replaced the winmodem on my parents machine with a pure-bred modem and got a additional 2KBs and faster download speeds on the same connection(it's rather noticable, especialy the DL speed). I have a friend who's neibor hood is so far out that everyone there gets 28.8 speeds on their winmodems on 56K connections. He bought a US Robotics pure-bred modem and is now getting 44KBs. Of course I have absolutly no idea why it made that big a difference, but the lag has dropped nicely.

Thanks for the help
Thank you for the help. I'll be checking in on the modem before I buy. I'm dropping the MS office 2000 package(my friend is giving me his extra one that he got for his birthday) and the Win 98 2nd edtion(I still have a copy from my last computer) and adding 512 DDR memory and 30GB 7200 rpm HD. That brings the price to $793. That software was killing the price. As far as the question about the 1.5GHz at the end of the fan list thats the fastest processor that fan is able to cool. Thanks again

Thought that might stir up something.
I've used Dells and I'm not exactly trilled with them. They use on-board devices and a lot of lower grade cards. Though it's part of the reason they can keep the price so low(wich is why they are so popular now that the PC market is slow). I also find it idiotic that they refuse to use anything other then Intel proccesors. Of course to get the best setup you have to build your own, but the system cainreed is buying looks like a solid mid-cost gaming machine.

As far as brands of computers go, you can start an endless debate. I would advise the readers to do their own, exhaustive research before investing in a system. Every Dell I've ever used has been top quality with high-end boards in everything including graphics cards.
And all computer prices are dropping because the market is flooded and the economy is down. For example, CD-RW drives are dropping like crazy due to a decrease in demand for them as a result of a drop in PC sales.
I have owned a Dell at home for 3 years and I have used them extensively at work with never a problem. I have also used Compaq's (I am working on a Compaq at the moment) with good results.
But again, the reader should do his/her own research and make his/her own decisions.
Take a look at http://www.computers.com (part of C/Net) and http://www.zdnet.com and
