running in background

When I hit CTRL + ALT +DEL one time, my computer shows 18 programs running in the background. This list appears even after a complete restore. I can do th End Task thing on each one, but am sometimes scared I disable the wrong thing. Any simple solution? By the way, what is Backweb Agent?

Start Up and Running Items

boman, First, for what I don't know go to MSKB and do a search for Backweb Agent or any other keywords. If you learn how to get around in MSKB you can find out almost anything. Pacs Portal Startup Content and Whidbey Running Items are two fine places to find out what happens at startup and how and what you can stop. This will all be done in msconfig. If you want to check out a couple of free programs that are small and work very well look at Startup Cop which controls startup with a couple of clicks and EndItAll which closes running programs with a click and is very useful if you download a lot or want to free resources for other things. Study this and you will be a StartUp Expert soon.....Mike

A utiltity that is available in Win 98 and can be copied to Win95 is MSCONFIG. You start the program Using START->Run and simply type it in and hit enter. This program will give you a better idea of what is starting up on your computer. This program also lets you turn stuff off.

Also, about ten or twelve programs is not bad if you're running Virus software, microsoft office and maybe Real and other multimedia software.
