Mis-associated programs
In the company I work for there are some internal files that are automatically created. The problem is that they were wrote back in DOS days and used file extensions that at that time were unique. Win 98 associates these internal files to unrelated programs and they wont open in the associated program because they were never supposed to be opened in that environment. How can I associate a different program to a known file extension. I can open them now by starting the application first and then opening the file but some of these files I use so much that I would like them to automatically open when I click on them (I guess the problem would happen in reverse then when I try to open a file that really was Win 98 and created by the application but that wouldn't happen as often).

When I hold down shift and right click one of the files the dialog box only gives me the Open choice not the Open With choice and if I hit Open it uses the wrong applicatoin to open the file. The files in question have a .mat extension. Win98 is automatically opening them with Access. I want to open them with Word (they are old DOS text files that are created very often here and the mat extension just was short for match..(if that matters)

Ok then, try this:
Open explorer, in the menu select view>options.
Click on the File Types tab, find the extension you wish to
modify, click edit, the Edit File Type window will open,
select open, click edit, click the cursor onto the window
marked "Apllication used to perform action", click on browse
to find the program to open it with.

OK!
You got me there Gary. It seemed like I needed to remove it from the list first and then add it with the new association...but after that it worked great. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction...much appreciated!
