Junk e-mail

Junk e-mail
Since joining this forum and a few like it, my junk e-mails are getting out of hand. I have received about 1500 junk ones in the last six months. The latest is the last straw! I will be sent 10 adult pictures per week unless I unsubscribe. I generally don't unsubscribe fearing even more crap. What do you think of unsubscribing?
I know nothing in life is free, and accept that forums like this need revenue, but this is a little too much. I don't visit adult sites and have only given my e-mail to seemingly legitimate ones.
Is it that revenue is getting harder to come by and these legit sites are hard up for cash?
I am using Outlook and wonder what blocking is all about.
One mistake was not providing an alternate address, but it's too late for that.

Unsubscribing from the junk sites that you no longer wish to receive emails from usualy works pretty good. When you use email blocking you can block all email from a complete domain, if you are getting several different emails from one domain but from different sources you can block all. If all emails are from different domains (user@domain.com) you need to block all domains you no longer wish to get emails from. But unsubscribe should take care of a lot of them.
And should not generate more junk mails.

I'm using OE and been using the message rules for a couple of months, and it works, if you can make the rules. I have one that deletes from the server any email that has a dirty word in the subject line or the body of the message. On occasion I have gotten one like you described that didn't have a single dirty word. I have found on my Outlook Express any thing I put in the blocked sender list gets deleted when I shut down, so I make it into a rule. It's easy to make the rules by just hacking at it a little bit, and you can even write the rule then apply the rule to mail in your inbox, or any other folder, to see if it works.

I doubt it's DIY.com
The address I use for this site hasn't recieved any junk. The messages are sent through the site so I don't even think the addresses are visible. I once visted a chat room on Compuserve and recieved about 100 links to sex sites in the next week. The problem forums are the ones on your own isp who use your screen name as your member or login name. Anyone can copy it and add the .com and junk is on it's way. I don't bother with unsubscribe as it seems the lists just keep getting sold. Use a yahoo address or like for the first few months on a new site to establish whether your address is being passed around.

Email
If you are getting that much junk mail it's time to change your email address. you may have to do this every few years. OE's filters do work great as I use them and have cut my junk to almost nothing. Even Hotmail has filters that work extremly well. If you do wish to change your address create one with numbers only. I have one on Hotmail as an experiment and it has not recieved one junk email in the 12 plus months it has been active. So like 123456@biteme.com. Of course dont use sequential numbers.

Thank you all for your advice.
It looks like the best thing I can do is just change my address.
I will then maintain a couple of other addresses to find out where it originates from. If a lot of mail comes from one domain, I guess I could use their email service for my sign-ups and give it all back to them.
Thanks again.

Don't feel your the only one getting junk mail, I too get the crap, I unsubscribe and it works but then it happens again, this is what I do, I replay and reply and reply and reply, and send replies, back to the sender telling to to remove my address from there data base or they will continue getting nasty replies from me, guess what, it works, I will send a dozen repies back all at one time. Try it, they stop and pull your e-mail off the list.

Plumber2000:
That sounds like a good idea. It's too late for my current address, but once I get a new one I won't let it get out of hand.

It might work and may not......
The true junkers just keep sending and use addresses they dump or setup falsely. I tried it with some junk email thinking it would give the same result however half of them are returned from Mailer Damon: Address unknown.........

I'm talking about the ones that have the unsubscribe options in there e-mail, once I do an unsubscribe and it tells me I'm no longer on the list, and then if I get another junk mail from them, then I send a dozen or so e-mails all at once asking them how they like getting junk mail, and if they continue sending to me I will continue sending a dozen or more message teliing to remove me or I won't stop sending to them. Funny thing about it is, I done a few e-mail junk replies, and never get anymore, but I'm waiting.
There is this one place that says allow 7 days to update the database, thats BS, once removed it should take effect right now. I don't need to wait but I can play there game.
Junk mail me will they, if they don't want to see a dozen or so e-mails all at omce, all saying the same thing, they will remove my address.
As for the no return address found, those I can do nothing about, those do stop and there not a continuous send to me.

I have been getting a bunch of the same emails that have a note at the bottom for unsubscribing. The email address I have has been in existance for 5 years, and is three names put together.
Rarely have there bee njunk emails until the past several months.

I had a similar problem with my business fax machine.
I was getting ad faxes from three different travel companies and Dell computers. I set my fax machine for 25 dialing attempts then sent the faxes back to their toll free order number. This was very satisfying. After I had my fun, I took a chance and unsubscribed. It seems to have worked. Havn't had a junk fax for over a month now.
