It sounds like a driver issue. Check the Device Manager and go to the Display folder. Does the card it thinks you have match the card you actually have? If Windows can't find a device driver for a display adapter during plug-n-play it simply uses the default windows VGA driver, which is 16 colors.

If the Standard VGA or SVGA driver is in place you will need to reload the correct driver for your card manually.

Although I don't understand: "Problem is with the main display adapter & then display will work" this is a fair list of Windows device error codes http://www.dewassoc.com/support/win98/devcode.htm

Resolution BIOS update - reinstall driver.

Before updating the BIOS; in addition to contacting the manufactures web site, it would be wise to seek Bigmikes or Mrhoadar consul, relinquishing minimal relevant information such as brand of computer, BIOS version, and windows version. Err here and you create paper weight.
