eraseing data from computer

Recently purchased a new system and will give this one to grandkids. How can I clear memory and erase files before they read everything I have done?

If you want to reformat that hard drive, which will erase everything including the operating system, put in a 98 operating system startup disk, restart your machine and when the a: comes up type format c: It will then format your hard driveand you can reinstall your operating system. This will clear everything else off your harddrive. If you have anymore questions I will try to help the best I can. Good Luck!!
