IE5 opens ZIP files.

When I left click on a .zip file (Like I always have),
Zip files now automatically download (where to I don't know)
and open. How do I fix it so that they just download, and I
can tell them where to go?

What software do you have that automatically opens zip files?
I am familair with WinZip, it never does this. Maybe there is a setting that needs to be changed for automatic operation.
use the "find file or folders" tool on the start menu and specify zip files. Normally there is a folder on the hard drive in aobvious place called unzipped, this will be the default location for unzipped files. Zipped files are put wherever IE puts them by default on your sys. "My Downloads" or "My Download Files" is the standard.

Does this right click, auto unzip happen while browsing online or after you've downloaded? While at windows update I noticed a patch for the explorer that fixes a bug that causes files to automatically be downloaded and unzipped.

If not, then you may have need to check your zip program for an automatic setting as suggested above.

You can reach windows update http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/d...productupdates
or through the icon on your start menu.

Only when online when I click on a zip file,
it downloads and opens. There is no option to disable
it in WinZip (like there is in Acrobat Reader).

I don't have Windows update, and MS doesn't have much
for IE5 anymoire.

http://support.microsoft.com/search/...;en-us;Q308090 This is for IE5.5 and up.

This is the closest I could find. Sure wish I could remember where I saw the patch for the auto unzip deal. May have been at another site.

I've upgrade iexplore to 6. I truly enjoy it, relatively few bugs. There have been a log of updates, but one thing to do before you download it. Know your Outlook Express or Outlook passwords for mail. If you upgrade from 5 or 5.5, it does not remember them. It will, however, keep you existing files and folders.

If I come up with anything, I'll post it for you.

Two suggetsions:
1. Downloads - right click choose save as.
Assumes win9x:
2. >My Computer >View >Folder options >File Types >WinZipFile >Edit check "Confirm open after download".
