Firewalls on your PC

Is it worthwhile to purchase internet firewall software? I have software from Ontrack but the Firewall gives me alot of problems when I surf the net. I have had this software for a while and it never gave me problems until I installed XP. The company states that it is XP compatable, but based off of my experience I wonder if that is really the case? Currently, I am considering researching Zone Alarm but before I install it I want to make sure that it will not interrupt my internet browsing. I know what all of the companies say about why you need a firewall. I also know what my perception is as well. What I am looking for is opinions and facts regarding internet firewall software, it's usefulness and it's necessity or perceived necessity.

I appreciate your input.
