Scan disk problem

Scan disk problem
When running the scan disk, it keeps stopping. Why? All programs are shut down that should be. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks. Also, how often should you run the scan disk and defragment? Thanks, sparkys:

Every day I hear more and more about how MS scan disk and defrag stops and/or restarts. I would suggest a 3rd party scanner and defrag. Many are free for use.

Usually the most likely cause is the anti virus program. A screen saver could do the same, and any power management features. Try running scandisk in safe mode, that way almost everything is not loaded.
