Windows 98
#1
I just upgraded to windows 98. My system seems to be slower and when I shut system down it sometimes will not shut all the way, I have to push power button. I have a HP. I have had problems with it locking up also. I ran the recovery disc and helped it some but it still locks up every so often, usually when I am scrolling. I've had it almost 3 years and it is still in warranty with Best Buy. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. Please use layman terms because I am not familiar with a lot of computer terms. Thanks.

Windows 98 requires more memory (RAM), you may be using most of it causing you PC to use the hard drive as temporary memory similar to what RAM does. Right click on My Computer then click on properties the click on the performance tab. There is a listing of your performance status. Your system resources should at least 75% with just Windows 98 running and at least 50% with one or two other programs like Word or Excel. Your can also check your amount of memory. If you are going to keep your PC for a little while and you have less than 64 mb of RAM you should increase to 64. Also, screen savers and wallpaper use memory--may consider not using them.

Thanks for the response. My pentium is 200 intel with mmx. I have 96 RAM and my performance resources is 81%. I ran scan disc a couple of days ago and the defragramenter about 2 weeks ago. The scan disc runs every time I have to shut system down manually and then when I restart. When I ran defragrmenter the window popped up saying it did not need it, but I proceeded with defragmenter. Any other suggestions or tips will be appreciated thanks again. Robert

You have more than enough system to run Win98 but there is an obvious conflict in the system. My bet is that not all of Win95 has gone away when Win98 was loaded. First thought is to reload Win98 to see if the conflict is resolved. I have seen Win95 programs disrupt Win98 because of bad load. That fact that you can't power the unit down tells me that there is still software running somewhere preventing the system to disconnect. When you power down the next time and it stalls, hit CONTROL+ALT+DEL. The system will tell you what is still running. That will tell you where the conflict is located. Powering down without full disconnect will crash a hard drive. The Scandisk evolutions you are running are a result of not powering down the system correctly. Next time you are up and running, turn off screensaver/anti-virus software, and run system Scandisk. You may be surprised. Do a thorough scandisk of all files. Come back and tell us the result of these checks I have asked for.

I ran the thorough scan disc and my system shuts down correctly now. I haven't had a chance to re install win 98, but will. I was thinking that I may need to do that to stop the locking up. I appreciate all the help from you good people, thanks a lot. I'll have another post in a day or so (I'm just not real bright). Robert

Robert, I have an HP too that was acting the same way. Scan Disk & Defrag will not help you. You need to go to the HP site and download the newest driver to accomodate Win 98. Once installed, your problems should go away. If not, then you need to go into the Bios and check whether or not your power settings are enabled. Yes, the BIOS - there are conflicts if the settings are incorrect. I will check back in a few days to see how your doing. One more thing, when you purchased Win98 what version do you have? There was a service release to the initial introduction. You'll know if you click on the Conrol Panel and find an icon that says TWEAKUI. That's the real power tool behind win98. Good luck

Thanks MB for the response. I went to the HP site but was a little reluctant to to down load any thing. There was several different down loads. Which exactly down load should I get? Also I was lost on the BIOS. As I said earlier I am not the brightest on the computer. I have seen BIOS in some of my moving through the different programs and such but could not locate it today. Also I could not find TWEAKUI in the control panel. Thanks again.

Robert,
Humm. . .that's a tough question because I don't know which HP you have and what version of 98 you have. So, let me give you the files names of what I downloaded. I have an HP 6470Z.
Biosupdate driver was at:
htp.com/cposupport/cons_swindexes/hppavillion9404_swen.html
To determine your BIOS readings:
1. Turn on your computer (not are reboot), as it begins to cycle up and BEFORE the first beep, hit F1 on your keyboard. Your BIOS should come up. DON'T CHANGE ANY SETTINGS if your not comfortable in this area, but look and see if the primary drive is 'disabled'. Call HP for assistance.
As for TweakUI. Go into explorer and do a search for tweakui (one word, no spaces) If it doesn't come up, then go to the Microsoft site and download it. If you have an icon in your Startup or Settings that says "Windows Update" use that command short cut instead (it probably designates the wrong address because it is someimes functional for alot of users)But the way to get around that is to open Internet Explorer and type in http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
(there's no www prefix)
When in doubt, this is the site I always go to for assistance when HP doesn't tell me what I want to know http://www.annoyances.org/win98/
I'll check back in a few days -- happy hunting - MB

Thank you MB for the info. My system smoothed out fairly well and I then installed a cd-rw. I really had problems then. I went to the HP site and down loaded the lucent driver, that was recommended for my system. It purrs like a kitten now. I have a 8140, and it has never run this good. I have had problems with it locking up every since I've had it, and assumed it was me not knowing what I was doing. Thanks again. Robert
