Good afternoon, joparent:
What moemaid is telling you is an excellent suggestion. However, this is another possibility. If you are using Internet Explorer, you may still be running the 5.0 version. This version had several kinks of which one was stalling. You might also find that you're running Windows without all the current upgrades. For this, I suggest you check in at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
and click on Product Updates. They will check your computer and offer both critical and recommended updates for your software. Also, you can get the new IE5.01 with security upgrades at this same site. You have to stay current!!

If your browser is Netscape, I'v heard it has what they call a "memory leak" and after some time, perhaps hours, it will just cause you to have to reboot. I changed to Microsoft Internet Explorer and the problem all but disappeared. My wife still uses Netscape and it happens OFTEN to her. In fact, we hoped to have time this weekend to migrate her to IE (which ain't perfect either).
Good luck,
John

just my two cents worth :
i had the same problem with my puta locking up for no reason at all.
pentium 450 running 98+ all updates that i could find.
after a lot of reading and research i found that if i had "word wrap " checked in notepad it would lock up
if i have it "unchecked " it didn't. so guess what is unchecked and lockup free
