celeron or pentium
#4
Well Pentium processors are good for gaming becuase they hold more multimedia instruction which handle things like graphics and audio processes. However if you were to say get a 700 celeron it will out perform the pentium 650 oddly enough but not by much becasue both chips impliment full speed cash. But the celeron is more budget saving then the pentium for about the same performance as the example above.

Why choose a celeron or a pentium when AMD makes processors that run cooler and are cheaper? AMD is making Athlon and Duron processors.. I think that the Duron is similar to a Celeron, but I'm not certain. My Athlon k7 700mhz is awesome! Just a thought.

I have run AMD processors in 2 of my machines and overall, they work fine, but I have had to swap out a certain brand modem card and other odd things when I first set them up in order to get them to work properly. AMD motherboards and/or the Chipsets found on the AMD motherboards have some compatibility restrictions with certain other brand perhiperal devices. I have always worked around these issues, but I do not appreciate the time it cost me to do the research and testing. You should know that if you install the operating system on an AMD, there are about 4 or so major patches you must download from AMD and install or you will never get the sounds cards, modems, etc to work right or at all. I recently installed a USB board on a AMD and the sound card no longer works. I have not solved this problem yet, but I suspect it is related to the AMD motherboard and AMD patches. This is an example of why I don't always give AMD a glowing recommendation to would be buyers. Given the chance I would gladly trade brands and buy the Celeron, but they always cost a bit more and I always decide to buy higher Mhz with the money allocated when it comes time to flop down the cash on the counter. I would like to hear want Celeron tinker'ers think of Celeron.

Currently there are no AMD mother boards in production. I wish there was! My source at Microsoft tells me there has been some talk about AMD making boards though. Installation of a USB port can cause other equipment to act up, but it's from an IRQ conflict or something of that nature. Try moving the audio card to another slot or use a brand name such as Creative Live. I love this card! Be sure you aren't running an in expensive main board. I personally recomend Tyan for the AMD chipset. The only two architectures currently out by AMD are Slot A and Socket 7 (super socket 7). I run AMD exclusivley in all systems I build for my customer and friends. To each his own but you will be happier with AMD. Cooler, stable and take an overclock better. Any compatibility problems are from the mother board not the processor. At least in my 20 plus years of fighting this stuff

I agree with BigMike. Have always used AMD processors. Don't see spending the extra money for Pentium. I recently purchased a Duron, got one of the first ones on auction at Amazon.com. Love it. Fast, stable and much cheaper than Celron. I believe the Duron has a little less L2 cahche on board but runs fine for home applications.
