I have an HP Computer with a rockwell modem 56k. Lightening got the modem and I had to send it off and have a new one installed. Since I have gotten it back I can only connect at 9600 bps. I have checked my phone lines with another computer so it is not the phone line. The other computer connects at normal speed. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Click: Start> Settings >Control Panel >Modems >General Tab In the lower portion of the applet you'll see the connection speed. If it says 56k do not change it. Otherwise do so. You'll also see a check box
saying connect only at this speed. You can try checking this box. Then click OK.

If neither worked a default windows driver may have been used during installation. Since you had the modem installed take it back and have them fix it. Another possibility is the dial up connection is 9600 BPS. Try an alternate number with 56k access.
