Cool IEXPLORE "Illegal Operation" Notice

I keep getting this little box popping up on my computer with this on it.
I have a Dell PC, Win98, IE 6, and more than 70% memory capacity.
Also, my wife can't get onto her msn chat room now, if THAT has anything to do with it.
What gives, and how do I correct it? Thanks.
Mike

Illegal Operation

It's a damning revelation on Microsoft business practices!

Ok, so I made that up.

It sounds like some of the files &/or settings for IE and MSN Messenger on your machine have become either mis-versioned or corrupt.

I would suggest going to microsoft's download center... http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.asp? ... downloading the latest version of both IE and Messenger and installing them on your PC. That ought to fix any bad settings or files.

Cool

logjam,
You're a genius! It worked, and my wife is back on chat. LOL.
What do I do with the new IE icon on my desktop? Can I just delete or move the icon, or will that delete the program?

*lol* Thanks, but if I were that smart I'd be able to solve all my own problems.

You can move/delete/jump up and down on the icon all you want, it wont harm anything.

My Two Cents Worth

Hi: Mike

You can delete an icon ONLY if it is a shortcut icon.

To check to verify the icon is a shortcut, simply RIGHT click on it.
Select properties and click on that. If the window that pops up has an arrow visable, it's a shortcut icon and can be deleted.

If the new icon on the desktop already has an arrow, it too is a shortcut icon.

If the old icon DOES NOT have that tiny arrow, DO NOT delete it. Doing so will delete the entire program and may cause irreversible and or permanate damage to the operating system.

You can locate the new icon anywhere. To install it into the task bar, slide the vertical divider bar towards the center of the menu bar area, drag the new icon into the menu bar area and it will remain there. It is a shortcut icon.

You can hide or delete the old shortcut icon at will. If you want the new icon in the start menu, drag it ti the start button and it will be listed in the start menu drop down list.

The orginal program icon will be within the programs file listings in the start menu list.

Cool

Hi Tom.
It must have been a shortcut icon (I don't know), because I've already deleted it, and everything is still O.K.
If I start having problems again, I'll just have to do all over again.
What do I know? LOL
