I will be putting down 2"x6"x16' PT floor boards on 20" centers. Will 2 screws for each 2x6 for each joist be adaquate or would 3 screws per joist be better? I thought 2 might not be enough but 3 seems crowded on a 2x6.

Thanks one and all.

I'm kind of curious why you have used such an odd spacing for centers. I hope that you won't incure any code infractions, besides that, wood has a mind of its own when it drys and I hope it stays flat and straight for you. I know it may sound like a lot of work, but I be popping the joists in on 16's. "There's never time to do it right, but there is always time to do it twice". If your sure your going to stick with 20" o/c, two screws will keep it down.
quote:
Originally posted by tester2:

Most people use a 24" O.C. spacing on their joists for 2x6 decking.

2 screws is standard procedure.

Well, perhaps its that we have to calculate snow loading into our decks is where we find ourselves differing. 16 o/c is the norm here. So we both just learned something new... and still smiling

Every deck I build, the joists are put 16" on center. No spongy decks here. Two galvanized teflon coated square holes screws, minimum of 2 1/2 inches for 1 1/4 decking, 3" for 1 1/2 decking.

I should have mentioned I am just replacing the floor boards on an existing deck put in by the previous homeowner. If I was building from scratch I'd put 16" centers in too.
OK, thanks for the help. Two screws per joist it is.
