I have a 6 X 6 cement slab that is 8" thick, I am thinking about building a deck where the patio was and attaching it to the slab. Any thoughts on this. one more thing , the area i want to work in has a small hill on it so part of the deck will be suspended, the other part will need to be built essentialy on the ground (to keep it level) any thoughts?

I would level out the hill as needed to keep the dirt 12" away from the wood, at the VERY least. 18" would be better. Then build the entire deck mounted on pier blocks, set in wet concrete.
