Question

I am building a 2 level design with the 2nd level using shared beam/post technique. Is it better to #1 have the top level sit joist on joist with the bottom framing and miter every diagonal 1st level deck board to meet the 2nd level rim joist, or #2 to deck the 1st level and then set the 2nd level on top of the deck boards, that run wild a few inches under the 2nd level. Opinions

Whether you put it on top of the deck boards or on top of the framing depends on how high you want to step up.

If your 2nd level joists are 2x8 you probably want to set it on the framing. If they are 2x6 then I'd put them on the deck boards.
