Question

I need a deck on the front of my home. It has a small, 4'x12 porch. The porch is approximately 3 1/2 feet off of grade. Any one know where I may find some deck plans that are around 18'x10' that would wrap the existing porch. I plan on having the deck one to two steps lower than the existing porch. thanks

At the risk of upsetting someone, I suggest that you go to a retailer that carries Simpson Strong Tie hardware. They have a good brochure that will assist you with design and layout. Also, MTAC posted a site in this forum a couple of weeks ago. See "Free deck plans", posted about July 30th.

Question

Thanks for this also. I have just printed out a simple deck plan and it is a great start for me. However, i notice that the joists run lengthwise and the decking runs widthwise. Does it have to be like this? I realise that it helps to be able to have a single piece of timber to span the whole width (or in my case the length) - but was wondering if I could do the opposite. The flooring in house runs lengthwise and i wanted the deck to give the impression of a continuation of the same floor. Am I being realistic?

No problem changing the way your joists and decking run. It's all in the way you design and build the deck.

Install manual overide switch to radiator cooling fan

I have a 1989 Buick Century Custom, 4dr sedan.
2.5L fuel injected engine, pwr brakes, pwr steering.

I want to install a manual overide switch to the radiator cooling fan so I can run the fan whenever I feel it necessary.

The car has four relays. If standing in front of the car the relays are on the left side. Which one is the relay for the cooling fan?
Next thing, which wire can I splice into so that I can hook up a
manual overide switch. What is the color of the wire??

If I can splice into the relay wire and then hook it up to a switch with the other wire going to ground I think I can make it work.
