Deck beams
#1
I'm building a deck that has a long dimension of 30' and I am running double 2x12's on either side of 4x4 posts in order to support the joists. My question is, whats the best way to cover this distance since I can only get a 20' 2x12 from the lumber yard and what do you recommend for the 4x4 post spacing?

I would split the 30' distance and at 15 feet, install a a double 4x4 post. Two of the side by side, and bolt the 4x4's together. I would buy 16' 2x12's and cut 1 foot off each to make 15' 2x12's. That way you have a balanced deck and structure. It is also very tough to get straight 20' 2x12's. They warp very easy. I would put my 4x4 posts every 5 feet both across and down the deck. Have fun.
