How do you lay a brick patio and what thickness of bricks should I use? How many inches of sand should be laid?

Typically "pavers" are used. In some areas they are called "patio pavers". The typical sand bed is between 2 & 4 Inches. Dig down (sand bed + brick thickness), build an edging (wood, concrete, brick) at the finished level. Remember to provide slope for drainage (1/4" to 1 foot). Apply pre-emergent (weed control), then landscape fabric, then clean masonry sand. Compact the sand. Screed the sand. Leave no more than 1/4" for leveling. The typical spacing between the brick is 1/4" (1/4" plywood may be used as a spacer). Place the brick in the desired pattern. Sweep sand in the joints.
