I am having a new house built, but will be adding a deck myself once the house is done. The deck will be attached to the garage. The garage floor is four feet below the house floor. I want the deck to be just below the house floor. So that means it will be up on the garage wall four feet high. My question is, can I lag screw the ledger board to the garage wall studs. They are spaced at 12" centers. How often should I screw the ledger board? I was going to use 3/8" lags so I didn't have to worry about splitting out a stud.

Attaching the ledger board to the studs of the garage wall will work just fine. Just predrill the holes before putting in the 3/8" lag bolts so you don't split the studs. And put a bead of urethane caulking (Vulkem 116 or similar) on the wall side of the ledger before installing it so water doesn't get inside the wall.
