Cedar fence

In Novemebr I purchased a home with a 6 ft. cedar fence. The fence was built in July of last year. The previous owners didn't stain, seal, or treat it. Do cedar fences need to be treated? It already shows signs of wear after only one winter.

Cedar is naturally rot resistant. It will last a long time if not in direct contact with the ground.
Now, all wood will weather to a silvery grey if left unprotected. This is mainly caused by the sun's UV radiation.
Your fence will probably last longer if treated with a colored stain which has uv inhibitors. If you decide to clean it (which should be done prior to any stain application), the preferred cleaner will be oxalic acid. Some deck/fence brighteners are made with oxalic.
Follow the instructions carefully, and wear the necessary eye/skin protection. Light pressure washing (1000 psi or less with a 40 degree tip) is best as cedar is a fairly soft wood.
Choosing a colored stain you like will be difficult, because once cleaned, your fence will look great.
If you have any other questions, do come back.

in that case the fence will fall over before it wears out (posts in ground will rot out). It should last 10-15 years before it needs replacing.

painting will only only make the fence look nicer, but will not prolong the life of it.
