Question Deck over a concrete slab

I'm build a 24x36 deck, that will sit partially over a 21x21, 4 inch thick concrete patio slab. The highest part of the deck will be 4ft, the remainder around 32 inches. The question is; can i set the posts right on the slab, and sink the other posts below the frostline (40 inches)? I haven't decided whether i'm doing free standing, or attach it to the house.

There are many variables involved in this. One thing we need to know is how many posts to sit on the patio and which ones? Interior, exterior, corner?

Centering for joists, 16" on center, 12" on center?

Thickness of deck boards and joists, and such.

Where is the frost line? Building code requires what depth?

Hope this helps.

8 posts (all on one end) will be off the slab, the rest on the slab. If needed, I could sink all of the corner posts.

Joists 16" on center, 2x8s.

Deck boards - Haven't decided if i'm going 2" or 5/4.

Code says 40".
