Question spacing of rails

Is there a math formula for spacing the rails on a balister? I'm using 1 1/2 inch wide balisters. Any hints?

A "formula"? No, but there is definitely a CODE!!

The rail has to be constructed in such a way that a 4" ball cannot pass through it.

Here's what I do -- use a block of 2X4 as a spacer. That way, the gap between the pickets will only be 3-1/2". I measure the spacing between the posts and find the center. Put a picket there, and use the spacer (2X4) and work towards each post. Do this for each section of railing between the posts. Check the pickets for plumb every 3rd or 4th picket. And one other hint -- Rotate the spacer top to bottom for each picket. Put an "X" on one end of the 2X4. After the center picket is installed, use the spacer with the "X" at the top to install the second picket. Then, rotate the spacer so the "X" is at the bottom and install the 3rd picket. Keep rotating the spacer as you work your way to the post.
