paver base material

Im putting in a paver walkway and was wondering what I need for base material. I have removed the loam and most of the dirt is a gravely type. Can I just remove the large rocks and compact that material to give me a base for my sand layer or should I remove more dirt and use a layer of crushed lime stone (or similar) for my base?
