Treating Redwood?

We just finished building a pergola-style porch covering over the weekend, and this morning saw almost a dozen termites walking along one of the redwood beams. We love the existing color, so would rather not stain it, but will any of the sealants on the market help with this problem? Any over the counter products or ideas other than a sealant? We'd like to prevent the critters now rather than deal with damage later.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I would seem to me that you might think about having your house inspected, rather than worry about the pergola at this stage.

Sealants and paint won't do much to prevent termite infestation. Correcting favorable conditions, such as: wood contact with the soil, moisture problems, bushes touching the house, rotted wood buried around the structure, firewood stored too close to the house, and so on.

Many like the color of redwood as it weathers.

Hope this helps.
