Porch pillars

We currently have metal pillars that are cemented into the porch and would like to replace them with wood pillars. Any advice on the proper procedure?

How big of posts do you need to support the porch roof?

We currently have 3 metal lattice type pillars. I would assume that we would replace them with the wood ones sold at Home Depot, but I don't know how to anchor them into the porch.

Anchoring them to the concrete is the easy part. HD sells a variety of Simpson post bases (ABA, ABE, ABU, ...) that will work just fine. But you need to determine what size post you need to support the roof before you start replacing the posts!

Couple of things you can do to do that. Call your local bldg. dept. and ask an inspector to look at it and tell you. And/or call a couple of bldg. contractors and get their estimates to replace the posts. They'll tell you what size needs to be used too. (If the bldg. inspector suggests a larger size than the contractors are talking about, go with what the inspector tells you!!)
