Question Decking around an above ground pool

I'm helping a freind build a deck around his above ground swimming pool. I have built decks on homes before, but never a pool. My friend is stuck on one part of the design. The pool has a plastic 5" cap/ledge that goes around the outside of pool. This cap holds the liner in place and has signs that ste no jumping or diving from ledge. When building this deck, it would look nicer if the top of the treated deck board was level with the top of the ledge, but my friend is concerned that if peoeple stand on this ledge to jump into the pool, it will weaken the wall and cause it to bend or collapse. If the decking is higher than that ledge, it will look funny and could hurt the kids. If the decking is under the ledge, then it could be a tripping hazard for kids. Has anyone installed a deck around a pool? Can you give me some tips an walk me throught the process? Or, does anyone know of a website that might have treated deck designs available for pools? Thank you for your help.

I have built exactly one deck along the top edge of an above ground pool, and will NEVER build #2, for EXACTLY the reasons you have stated.

Above ground pools are too shallow to jump or dive into. A deck along the edge simply encourages that to happen.

I have since built several decks around above ground pools, but they are 'ground level' decks, leaving AT LEAST 30" of the pool wall exposed.

I built my deck so the deck boards go under the coping

Hi Alidar,

I do not know if you friend and you have already built the deck but if you haven't I suggest that you build the deck so that the deck boards go under the coping of the pool. I did it for my pool but it was only for 20ft length. My deck did not go around the pool MY pool is a 30ft round and I built a 20X14 deck which the deck boards ran perpendicular to the pool. Which let me put the boards under the coping. (lip of the pool) I have so photos of the pool and deck at my web page. Just copy this link without the quotation marks. It is "http://decks.hemmingsjones.com" I believe you will get a idea for your
friend's deck.
